Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women (ACSVAW) is a nonprofit organisation, aiming to promote women’s right and raise public concern on sexual violence. ACSVAW has a Facebook page that acts as a platform to give sexual education and provide sexual information, at the same to time interact with social media users.
As women are always the victims as portrayed by the social media, ACSVAW asserts an alternative discourse using its Facebook page by emphasising on women’s body autonomy and breaking their victimisation. There are some informative posts and activities shared, promoting sexual autonomy and opening up discussion with social media users, for example:
“My Body! My Choice! Demonstrations” (2016香港蕩婦遊行 Slut Walk Hong Kong / 我身體!我話事!)
Discussion on setting up “Women Only” car (女性專用車廂)
Breaking Myths of Sexual Violence: “She is meant to be sexually violated in such sexy outfit” (個女仔着得咁Sexy,畀人摸咪抵佢囉)
We chose the Facebook page of ACSVAW as our research subject because ACSVAW targets at the younger generation while other feminist organisations have targeted audiences like the new immigrants and sex workers. The style of ACSVAW to promote women’s right is more futuristic, which successfully attracts social media users to follow, and thus receive sexual education and information.
In this project, there are three interviewees. Two of them are followers of the page of ACSVAW, one with the experience of being sexually violated and one without. We also investigated whether they are inspired by the Facebook page. Besides, an interview was conducted with a staff from ACSVAW to look at the reasons for them to use Facebook as the platform to deliver sexual information and its effectiveness.
